A zip code is a 5 digit numbers sign, inscription that you write on a letter or on a package before sending it to the person who is supposed to get it.
What do we need a zip code for?
The thing is that a zip code written on your letter or package helps a postman to sort the mail quicker and more effective. How can that be you may ask, but everything is banal and simple in fact.
When a postman takes a roll of letters and puts it on his table, he has to read the address on each other letter to understand where it should be sent to. Just imagine, several thousands letters and packages a day, 5 days a week, for years! Would you be able to bear it?
Therefore a postman should have either fewer letters to be delivered or he should be able to skip through the address without wasting too much time. How can this be achieved?
To be able to spend less time sorting out letters a post needs a zip code to be written on it. A zip code represents the area a person is from; therefore if you look at it first you decipher the information hidden behind the numbers.
You do not need a lot of time to remember zip codes, especially the ones of your area and knowing them you, if being a postman, can spend less time sorting out letters and packages.
A list of United States zipcodes can become a helpful handout if you are the person working with mail. The country seems to comprise endless territories therefore a list of United States zipcodes is extremely long and it is impossible to learn it by heart, it is better to have one of ones own. (What about Arizona zip codes?)
